Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of image and its verbal embodiment in everyday and official languages. It is postulated that a linguistic attempt to comprehend the world as a totality of the known and the knower is feasible on the principles and conditions of receptive phenomenology. The world of objectively existing phenomena is contrasted with the reality of consciousness, which manifests phenomenal reality «for us.» The image is considered as a component of the mental states of language users. The article argues against the formalization of substantive elements that have literal or figurative meanings and constitute an antinomy to symbolic discursive means. It is noted that language combines the perceptible and the monumental, the essence and the existence. The juxtaposition of verbal communication and speech communication sheds light on the essence of the image and its verbalization in the word Homo loquens (The Speaking Man).
