THE PERSONAL MEANING OF A CHILD IN THE SYSTEM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF-REGULATION OF REPRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR

Abstract
The article presents the results of a theoretical and empirical study of the place and role of the personal meaning of a child within the system of self-regulation of an adult's reproductive behavior. The hypothesis that the personal meaning of a child, being a leading factor in motivational regulation, acts as a system-forming structural and functional component (a modulator variable) in relation to other regulatory structures and processes of reproductive behavior, is theoretically substantiated and empirically proven. Based on data from a representative Belarusian sample (N = 1844), empirical types of the personal meaning of a child for an adult were identified: alienated, utilitarian, value-utilitarian, and value-based. Typological (intergroup) differences in the psychological self-regulation of reproductive behavior among adults with different types of personal meaning of a child were established. From the standpoint of the typological approach, previously unknown mechanisms and patterns of the modulating influence of the personal meaning of a child on various components of the psychological self-regulation of reproductive behavior, as well as on objective and subjective reproductive success, are revealed.
