CHANGES IN MEMORY INDICATORS OF ADULTS UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS OF COGNITIVE ACTIVITY

Abstract
This article examines changes in adults' cognitive functioning under conditions involving different
information encoding systems – printed and digital. The article presents the results of two experimental studies conducted using the same design (alternating between printed reading and online searching) and differing
dependent variables (direct and indirect memorization). It was established that different activity conditions have different effects on the average adultʼs memory performance. Changing activity conditions does not alter
mechanical memory performance, but does cause a deterioration in the semantic memorization of unfamiliar words. This deterioration manifests itself in a threefold increase in word recall errors under online searching conditions compared to the printed reading condition, which is observed in relation to the memorization of words with different meanings – both concrete and abstract. Prospects for further research aimed at identifying the cognitive resources of internet users that enable them to increase the productivity of their cognitive
processes in activities mediated by digital technologies are discussed.
