Binary and Ternary Nature of Russian Culture: the Sacred and the Simulacrum in E. G. Vodolazin’s Novel «Justification of the Island»

Abstract
The article examines the sociocultural concepts of Yu. M. Lotman and B. A. Uspensky, who define Russian culture as binary, as well as those of V. V. Kolesov and A. G. Dugin, who interpret it in terms of ternary gradation. The interaction of these models within a unified theoretical framework is illustrated through the universe of E. G. Vodolazkin’s novel «The Justification of the Island». The study describes the oppositions functioning within the novel, such as sacred versus sinful, which correlate with the contrast between the real and the imitation. Special attention is given to the category of «kitsch», which arises when examining the specifics of the theory of simulacra as a «copy without an original» in the context of Russian logos. This category acts as a mechanism for the gradation of binary relationships between truth and false-hood, facilitating the preservation of the sacred. The overcoming of binary closure and the alienation of the individual in the novel is linked to the experience of Orthodox faith. Thus, the relationship between binarity and ternarity is determined not by objective social processes but by the free personal choice.
