CRYSTAL CUP WITH THE NAME «IVAN» FROM THE SAPIEHA FAMILY COLLECTION

Abstract
The article is dedicated to one of the most famous artifacts from the Sapieha family collection – the crys-tal cup «Ivan». For the first time, the topic of the history of the appearance of this crystal cup in the treasury of the Sapieha family is raised. The study of this topic was conducted on the basis of the analysis of archival docu-ments, texts by historians of the 18th–19th centuries, and political events that took place on the territory of Bela-rus, Poland, Lithuania, France, and Italy in the 15th–16th centuries, in which the magnate Sapieha family of the Copenhagen line, the family of the princes of Glinsky, and the grand dukes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania participated. Research into the history of crystal in Europe in the 11th–16th centuries, European centers of artistic crystal processing, and rare exhibits of this delicate material preserved in museums around the world gave rise to a hypothesis about what the legendary «Ivan» cup, which is of extraordinary importance for the history of Belarus as a national relic, might have looked like.
