The Property Status of the Franciscan Order in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the XIV–XV centuries: Ideology and Historical Realities

Abstract
The article is based on a comparison of legislative standards regulating property relations of the Order of Friars Minor with the realities of the 14th–15th centuries on the example of the Franciscan monasteries of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Analysis of deeds of gift to the Franciscan order, drawn up in the 1387–1460s on the one hand, it gives an idea of how widely and in what way the Franciscans were involved in various aspects of the life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and on the other hand, it demonstrates how the original ideal of «absolute poverty» was consistent with the real state of affairs in the order. The growing number and influence of the order caused increasing discrepancies between the founderʼs lifestyle and the needs of his followers, which necessitated the legal registration of the Franciscansʼ relationship with property, which entailed a change in the early rules of St. Francis.
